The media and other sources have led the general public to believe that men are better at math. In terms of general math ability, the National Center for Educational Statistics (2004) reported scores fro 8th grade students on standardized test of math. The average scores from 34 countries were as follows; boy’s average higher in 16 countries, girls’ average higher in 16, and girls and boys had same average in 2 countries. Additionally, while boys may score higher on average in standardized tests, females outperform males in high school and college math courses.
