The Magazine - Making Social Psychology Accessible |
Welcome to the website of the Inquisitive Mind. The Inquisitive Mind, or In-Mind, is a young and exciting on-line quarterly magazine for social psychology. The magazine’s purpose is designed to interact with everyone that is interested in everyday human concerns and to inform you on the hot trends in scientific social psychological research. Now, science has its own language and you might not feel like having the time to keep up-to-date. We will attempt to bridge the existing gap by relating important social psychological research to issues that catch your mind.
What is social psychology exactly though? According to the website of the Free University, Amsterdam, “social psychology studies how the social environment influences human thought, emotion, and behavior. Because social influence is pervasive in almost everything people think, feel, and do, social psychology is a very broad and increasingly multidisciplinary discipline”. A social psychologist thus does not only focus on the individual mind, but on processes within individuals, groups, and between groups.
As a result, our discipline studies exciting, stimulating or sometimes just interesting topics such as romantic relationships, life’s fundamental anxieties, prejudice, social influence, emotions, and decision-making. Our research touches upon topics within a broad ranges of sciences: biology, sociology, economics, etc. It is our belief that social psychology can have a far more pervasive influence in policy-making and governing than it currently has. Specifically because our science can help explain processes and events that many people are concerned about in their lives.
In this realm, the current prime minister of the Netherlands, Jan-Peter Balkenende, has criticized scientists for not engaging in public debate. Our hope is that this magazine will contribute to this public debate by entering discussions that concern you. For example, how can you and your partner develop a healthy relationship? Why do people engage in torture? Under certain circumstances, would you engage in torture? And how is it that some people can keep a steady motivation and others not?
So, what all does In-Mind offer? First, you can read on the aforementioned topics by reading our articles. We have lifted the need for registration, and you can now read all of our articles for free, without leaving any info. Of course, if you want to be updated on our new developments, you can register for our newsletter.
You can always discuss, debate, and argue with the authors and with other members.
We welcome (social) psychologists to submit articles. Please see the guidelines for submission in the menu on the left.
Rests us nothing then to welcome you to In-Mind and invite you to challenge others with your provoking thoughts!
Finally, a new initiative is a way to raise funds. In order to advance In-Mind's mission, we will need your help. We accept donations of all amounts. If you have a warm regard for our mission, you can help us by donating on our PayPal account which you can access by clicking the donate button below. This is of course a transaction via a secured server.
